Bicycles Made For You

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Bicycles have quite a history! The modern day bicycle had it’s birth, way back in 1818. A German, Baron Karl von Drais, invented the pushbike, also called the draisine or hobby horse. It had two in-line wheels that were connected by a wooden frame. The person riding it, would push with his feet while steering the front wheel. Today, we have many different types of bicycles all made for various purposes, including mountain bikes, bmx bikes, road bikes and more!

The Mountain Bike

Mountain bikes (MTB), also known as All Terrain Bicycles (ATB) are used by sporting enthusiasts and hobbyist who love to ride the dirt trails or unpaved environmental, rough terrains that challenge their endurance. Mountain bikes are specially designed for this kind of rough treatment. They have fat, knobby tires that have extra traction and can absorb shock well. They usually have both front and rear wheel suspension and some may have bar ends on the handlebars or the more popular riser handlebars.

The BMX Bike

The Bicycle Moto-cross(X) or BMX bicycles are specially designed bike for racing on earthen tracks. Riders also use these bikes to perform tricks (BMX freestyle). There is a governing body for BMX racing called: Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). They sponsor the UCI BMX World Championships. BMX enthusiasts started out in California in the 1960’s when teens idolized Steve McQueen. One of the early hero’s of BMX freestyle was Bob Haro, owner and manager of “Haro Bikes”.

The Road Bike

Road bikes are designed for use on paved roads. They are used primarily for racing. They have drop handlebars and multiple gears. There are several types of road bikes: racing, touring, and utility.

Racing bikes are fast, very lightweight and made to be aerodynamic. Touring bikes are made to be comfortable for the long haul and capable of carrying heavy loads. Utility bikes are for those riders who love to commute great distances, or do a lot of shopping and traveling around city streets.

Other Bikes

Another type of bike is the exercise bike. This bike is for those who find biking a fun way to stay in shape or to lose weight. Exercise bikes are usually stationary. Kids have specially made bikes like tricycles made for toddlers with one big wheel in front and two smaller wheels in back. There are track bikes that do not have brakes because the riders go in the same direction on a track where there are no corners and no other traffic besides those racing. These track bikes have a fixed gear and no freewheel, which does not allow for coasting.

Most communities have a bicycle shop that will sell specialty bikes. They also sell bicycle supplies and special gear. Bicycles can also be purchased in retail stores and even online. No matter who you are, what your age is, and even how physically fit you are, there is sure to be a bicycle that will fit your lifestyle. Bicycles can be found in any city and in any country.

Bicycles are versatile, enjoyable, and a great way to travel while having fun and also a popular way to get your daily exercise. Many are using bicycles to get to work; and with today’s gasoline prices, this is a very smart choice. So, grab the bike that strikes your fancy out of the many types of bicycles available and enjoy!

Experience The Beauty And Majesty Of Kayaking

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Kayaks were first introduced by the Inuit. They crafted them out of wood and sealskin. Adding a small hole in the middle, they used the kayaks for hunting in the icy waters of the Arctic, specifically around the Bering straight which separates Alaska from Russia.

Over the years, kayaking has become a popular sport and the materials used have significantly improved from wood to fiberglass. This offers more versatility and the ability to maneuver the kayak more easily. In 1936, kayaking became a new sport in the Olympics and included singles and doubles competitions.

Whether you participate in kayaking for pleasure or sport, there is one specific kayak journey coming up that will not only afford you the opportunity to fully enjoy the experience, but help a worthy cause as well. The Mississippi River Challenge will commence next month on August 4th and 5th. It is a two-day event which encompasses a 44 mile trek along the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities area.

What is this challenge all about? Its main objective is to raise funds to help protect, conserve, and restore the Mississippi River. Sponsored by Friends of the Mississippi River which was formed in 1993, there are over 1300 members whose goal is to improve the water quality, protect riverfront land, and reintroduce the mighty Mississippi through education, recreation, and events such as the Mississippi River Challenge.

Those who take this kayak journey will not only be helping the environment, but restore the Mississippi which was once a historical and cultural landmark. In fact, one such person has recorded his preparation for the challenge as he paddles along McIntyre River in a kayak Thunder Bay. The photos of his experience on the river offer a glimpse of the challenges he will face in the Mississippi River Challenge.

You can participate by sponsoring anyone who is preparing for this challenge as well as help support Friends of the Mississippi as well. Those who kayak Mississippi will be met with a daunting task. Over two days and 22 miles per day, these troupers will brave the waters of the Mississippi to complete their mission.

Jason Bruce will take part in this challenge because he desires to be part of an organization that protects the “unique ecological, cultural, historical and recreational assets of the Mississippi River and its watershed in the Twin Cities. Through education, outreach and advocacy, we are connecting people to the river and raising awareness of how protecting it benefits everyone.”

It takes a great deal of skill and fortitude to be able to kayak. However, once on the river you are given the opportunity to become awe-struck by the beauty and majesty of the environment we so much want to protect and preserve. Through his commentary, photos, and videos, Jason provides us not only with his own personal thoughts, but allows us to paddle along with him as he prepares for the challenge in Mississippi. Good luck to all who are participating in this worthy event.

Hacky Sack - From The Beginning

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

What is hacky sack? It is a sport which originated in China and other parts of Asia as well as in Native America. Known today as footbag, it was originally invented by two men named John Stalberger and Mike Marshall. The concept encompassed creating a hand-made bean bag that could be kicked around. Eventually, these two men called the game Hacky Sack.

Consequently, Hacky Sack or Footbag developed into different forms of play. While there were footbag net where players volley a hacky sack over a five-foot net, or free-style footbag where players stand in a circle and do tricks with the hacky sacks as they pass it around.

Footbag has become quite popular in Europe and North America. There are footbag clubs and players who compete around the world as well. Utilizing foot to foot battles with the footbags, this sport has many varieties of play, and they compete in footbag tournaments and festivals every year.

There is also freestyle footbag in which difficult moves makes are judged according to choreography, difficulty, variety, and execution. Players choreograph their moves to music, and are judged on how well their style of play matches their choice of music. They are also judged on their originality and creativity. Each move or trick has a difficulty rating.

Players must perform moves that contain elements from five general categories: leg dexterity which means circling the bag with the foot; delays or the method in catching the footbags; spins, fliers, and blind moves; unusual surfaces where footbags are utilized on different parts of the body such as the sole, shin, or head; and cross-body moves are achieved by crossing the foot to the other side of the body. The ability of the players to keep the footbags off the ground while performing these difficult moves is the basis of this sport.

To demonstrate the difficulty of this sport, here are some statistics based on winners of past footbag tournaments:

Women’s Doubles Footbag Tournament - Total Kicks: 34,543 - Total Time: 5 hrs. 38 mins. 22 sec.
Open Doubles Footbag - Total Kicks: 132,011 (previously 123,456) - Total Time: 20 hrs. 34 mins.
Women’s Singles - Total Kicks: 24,713 - Total Time: 4 hrs. 9 mins. 27 secs.
Men’s Open 5-Minute Timed - Total Kicks in 5 Minutes: 1019
Women’s 5-Minute Timed - Total Kicks in 5 Minutes: 804
Largest Footbag Circle - Total Players: 946.

Hacky Sack, as you can see, is a sport involving the use of footbags and the players’ precision and dexterity in the use of executing difficult moves for a specific length of time. This is, no doubt, an interesting and obviously difficult sport, but one in which everyone involved has a great time in competing with others. Hacky Sacks can be bought from a Hacky Sack (Footbag) Online Shop.

Should You Use a Sports Nutrition Supplement

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

From a commercial point of view, this sports nutrition business is booming. Last year nearly $1 billion was spent on sports nutrition supplements. From professional athletes to weekend softball players, everyone seems to be jumping on the supplement bandwagon. But before you consider taking any nutrition supplement to improve athletic performance, or for any other reason, it is important to know the facts about these products.

In this article, we will cover the basic types sports nutrition supplements, and their practical uses in building strength, increasing endurance and improving metabolism, as well as other positive physical effects.

Nutritional supplements are divided into four distinct categories: metabolic fuels, cellular components, anabolic substances, and recovery enhancement substances.

Metabolic fuels would include carbohydrates, lactate and fat, and are most commonly used to build muscle mass. These types of supplements are popular with bodybuilders and other athletes seeking to “bulk up.” Metabolic fuels can be found at most health food and nutrition outlets.

Cellular components are supplements to improve the natural human metabolism. These components include creatine, carnitine, and vitamins. Cellular components are often used to slim down, or reduce overall body fat content.

Anabolic substances can be used to enhance athletic performance, and include proteins, amino acids, plant sterols, chromium, and herbal supplements. There’s currently a great deal of debate regarding the ethical use of anabolic substances within professional sports, but that hasn’t stopped pro-or amateur athletes from taking advantage of these supplements.

Recovery enhancement substances can include fluids, herbal supplements, or electrolytes. These are primarily used to rebuild damaged muscle, cartilage or other body tissue after an injury, and have been popular for many years in professional sports.

Nutritionists and healthcare professionals continue to debate the ethical use of all types of sports supplements, particularly the anabolic substances which have become very popular in both pro and amateur sports leagues. But despite the controversial nature of some of these supplements, most users seem convinced that when used safely, sports nutrition supplements offer significant performance benefits and a minimum of risk.

If you are considering using a sports nutrition supplement, it is critical that you abide by the recommended daily allowances, and refrain from taking higher than standard doses. Many people believe that because a nutrition supplement is natural, it does not have any adverse health effects, but this is clearly untrue. When taken in higher doses, many natural sports supplements do have side effects and other potential adverse health reactions.

It’s always better to err on the side of caution in considering a supplement. And it is advisable to pay extra careful attention to eating properly and staying adequately hydrated at all times when using sports supplements.

While the verdict may still be out on the safety of taking a sports nutrition supplement, there is little doubt that athletes will continue to use these natural performance boosters as long as they are unavailable.

Taking A Look At The Different Types Of Bicycles

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

One of the fondest memories as children is receiving a red tricycle at Christmas. Complete with a horn and tassels, some of you probably still have the bike at home and have repainted and fixed it up for your kids. Well, believe it or not, there are over a billion bicycles in the world today. Whether used for pleasure, or getting around in a metropolis, there are different types of bicycles which are used for a variety of reasons.

Why types of bicycles are there? Well, there are your regular bicycles used for pleasure and/or commuting. Mountain bikes used for off-road use, racing bicycles such as the ones used in the Tour de France, indoor track bicycles which you may have seen in the Olympics, bikes used for messenger service, touring bicycles which have the capacity to hold bags and other travel accessories, stunt bikes, as well as the old-fashioned tandem bikes that hold two riders. There are even tri-cycles that can accommodate three riders.

In China, for example, bicycles are their main form of transportation. In fact, China also has touring bikes or bicycle rickshaws which have carts attached suitable for one or two passengers. Wherever you find a large city that is congested with cars and trucks, you will find bike lanes. These help to alleviate traffic and allow those who do not wish to drive to use these lanes in order to facilitate getting from point A to point B in due course.

You may have also seen tricycles and unicycles in immense proportions that are used in circuses and county fairs. There is also a bicycle in which the rider can lean back with legs forward to man the pedals. These are called recumbent bikes, which also allow for a second passenger to ride in back.

In addition, there is the traditional stationary bicycle primarily used for home or gym exercise. You may have also seen the motorcross bicycles which are used in competitions. These encompass jumping on and off ramps, allowing for free wheel turns, and other death-defying feats.

While the types of bicycles originally produced were primarily for pleasure and transportation, the emergence of bike sports has given way to more advanced types of bicycles which can perform a series of moves by experienced bicyclists.

Also new to the world of bicycles is the electric bike. With speeds of two to twenty miles an hour, these electric bicycles are known as e-bikes and have a power system installed on a regular bicycle. Unique and stylish, the electric bikes’ power comes from a throttle on the handlebar or initiate power when you pedal. This is just one more technological advance in bike enhancement.

If you own a bike, as most people do, and want to rev it up a notch, you may wish to check out these types of bicycles online. They are a fascinating and innovative achievement which has taken the traditional bicycle and added a new level of excitement for bike riders.

The All Important Fishing Tackle

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Any good fisherman knows that your fishing tackle is a very important part of the whole “fishing scene”. Whether you fish for sport or commercial, the main fishing tackle gear includes: bait, hooks, leaders, lines, lures, reels, rods, and sinkers. To help you keep your fishing tackle facts sorted out we’ve included some handy fishing tackle tips for you.

Fishing Tackle Tips and Fascinating Fishy Facts

Sportfishing is basically what you do if you catch fish using a rod and reel.

Three commonly used tackles are: fly-fishing, plug-casting and spinning. Plug-casting and spinning use bait as weight to drag the fishing line from it’s reel to where you are targeting.

There are 4 types of fly lines: double taper, level taper, shooting-taper and weight-forward.

Fishing line is ranked from 1 to 15 with 3 to 12 being the most common among anglers.

The first 30 feet of your line should be weighted and matched to your rod.

Beginners should use spin-casting gears because they are easy to operate and have the least amount of setbacks.

Professional anglers prefer bait-casting and spinning tackle and artificial lures (1/8 ounce to 1 ounce).

You will need bobbers, hooks and sinkers in different styles and sizes. The smaller the bobber the better it performs.

Safe Fishing Tackle Tips For Kids

There is nothing cuter than a kid fishing with his dad or mom. Fishing can be fun when there is a little action on the water. Here are a few tips to make your trip enjoyable and practice safe fishing.

Go for quality fishing tackle; pass by the cheap cute stuff. If you buy the cheap stuff you will end up spending more time untangling knots than enjoying the fishing.

Go for a good spool of line like Stren for ease of casting and fewer line tangles. Recommended: two-four pound test.

Use at least a few torpedo style floats. Ask for the ones that are specially made for flies.

Buy flies that are made for dry fly fishing (they will float). Also good are sponge spiders and “Pan Pops”.

Miscellaneous Fishing Tackle Tips

The best tip of all when picking out your fishing tackle is to know your fish! Understand the lifestyle of the fish species you are hoping to catch. What kind of diet are they on? Your tackle equipment should reflect what the fish like that you are aiming to catch.

Your fishing gear will not only change depending on the type of fish you are looking to catch, it will vary depending on whether you are going to be fishing in fresh or saltwater and also if you will be fishing in still waters, moving river or a class 5 rapid. Location is also important as the climate and environment is also important considerations when choosing your fishing tackle.
