Bicycles Made For You
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007Bicycles have quite a history! The modern day bicycle had it’s birth, way back in 1818. A German, Baron Karl von Drais, invented the pushbike, also called the draisine or hobby horse. It had two in-line wheels that were connected by a wooden frame. The person riding it, would push with his feet while steering the front wheel. Today, we have many different types of bicycles all made for various purposes, including mountain bikes, bmx bikes, road bikes and more!
The Mountain Bike
Mountain bikes (MTB), also known as All Terrain Bicycles (ATB) are used by sporting enthusiasts and hobbyist who love to ride the dirt trails or unpaved environmental, rough terrains that challenge their endurance. Mountain bikes are specially designed for this kind of rough treatment. They have fat, knobby tires that have extra traction and can absorb shock well. They usually have both front and rear wheel suspension and some may have bar ends on the handlebars or the more popular riser handlebars.
The BMX Bike
The Bicycle Moto-cross(X) or BMX bicycles are specially designed bike for racing on earthen tracks. Riders also use these bikes to perform tricks (BMX freestyle). There is a governing body for BMX racing called: Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). They sponsor the UCI BMX World Championships. BMX enthusiasts started out in California in the 1960’s when teens idolized Steve McQueen. One of the early hero’s of BMX freestyle was Bob Haro, owner and manager of “Haro Bikes”.
The Road Bike
Road bikes are designed for use on paved roads. They are used primarily for racing. They have drop handlebars and multiple gears. There are several types of road bikes: racing, touring, and utility.
Racing bikes are fast, very lightweight and made to be aerodynamic. Touring bikes are made to be comfortable for the long haul and capable of carrying heavy loads. Utility bikes are for those riders who love to commute great distances, or do a lot of shopping and traveling around city streets.
Other Bikes
Another type of bike is the exercise bike. This bike is for those who find biking a fun way to stay in shape or to lose weight. Exercise bikes are usually stationary. Kids have specially made bikes like tricycles made for toddlers with one big wheel in front and two smaller wheels in back. There are track bikes that do not have brakes because the riders go in the same direction on a track where there are no corners and no other traffic besides those racing. These track bikes have a fixed gear and no freewheel, which does not allow for coasting.
Most communities have a bicycle shop that will sell specialty bikes. They also sell bicycle supplies and special gear. Bicycles can also be purchased in retail stores and even online. No matter who you are, what your age is, and even how physically fit you are, there is sure to be a bicycle that will fit your lifestyle. Bicycles can be found in any city and in any country.
Bicycles are versatile, enjoyable, and a great way to travel while having fun and also a popular way to get your daily exercise. Many are using bicycles to get to work; and with today’s gasoline prices, this is a very smart choice. So, grab the bike that strikes your fancy out of the many types of bicycles available and enjoy!
