Orienteering Facts

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Orienteering is a running sport involving navigation with a map and compass.

Traditional form (sometimes referred to as “Foot Orienteering” involves cross-country running, though other forms have evolved.

The course of control points is kept a secret from competitors before the start, when they are provided with a detailed topographic map on which the course is marked.

The competition is a timed race in which individual participants use a special purpose map and a magnetic compass to navigate through diverse terrain (often wooded) and visit, in sequence, control points that are indicated on the map.

The English name derives from the Swedish word “orienteering”. The term was first used to describe the sport in 1918 by Major Ernst Killander, then President of the Stockholm Amateur Athletic Association, in publicity for competitive meet held in Sweden.

Orienteering originated in Scandinavia, as a military exercise, in the late 19th century. The competitive sport form began in Norway where the first competition was sponsored by the Tjalve Sports Club on 31 October 1897 and held near Oslo.

World championships were held biannually from 1961 to 2003, and are now held every year.

Efforts begun in 1996 to promote the inclusion of orienteering in the Olympic games have so far been unsuccessful, although orienteering became a sport in the World Games in 2001, and is a sport in the Summer Deaf Olympics.

Netball Facts

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Netball is a team sport similar to and derived from basketball. It was originally known as “women’s basketball” and developed in the United States, and while basically unknown in its homeland, is the pre-eminent women’s team sport (both as a spectator and participant sport) in Australia and New Zealand.

Like basketball, the game is played on a hard court with scoring rings at both ends, and with a ball resembling a basketball (but lighter, smaller and slightly softer in construction, and usually white in color).

The hoops, whilst of similar height and dimension to basketball hoops, do not have a “backboard”.

There are seven players on each team, who are given nominated, named positions. In competitive netball, each player must wear “bibs” or “patches” showing the abbreviations below, indicating their position.

The field is divided into thirds which regulate where individuals in each team are allowed to move, and two semi-circular “shooting circles” at each end from within which all scoring shots must be taken.

Mens netball teams exist, but are uncommon. Most teams are all woman.

A game is played in four quarters, each one lasting 15 minutes, with intervals of three minutes between the first and second quarters, and between the third and fourth quarters.

Netball rules do not permit players to take more than one step in possession of the ball. Consequently, the only way to move the ball towards the goal is to throw the ball to a team-mate. The ball cannot be held by a player for more than three seconds at any time.

Multi Sports Facts

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

A multi-sport is a sport in which athletes compete in a number of different sports such as triathlon.

The first modern multi-sport event organized were the Olympic Games, organized by the International Olympic Committee (est. 1894) for the first time in 1896 in Athens, Greece. After some badly organized celebrations (1900, 1904), the Olympics became very popular. The number of sports, initially only a few, is still growing.

The sport of aquathlon consists of a continuous, two-stage race involving swimming followed by running.

Biathlon (not to be confused with duathlon) is a term used to describe any sporting event made up of two disciplines. Biathlon, however, usually refers specifically to the winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting.

Duathlon is an athletic event that consists of a running leg, followed by a cycling leg and then another running leg in a format bearing some resemblance to triathlons.

A heptathlon is a sportive contest made up of seven events (from the Greek hepta (seven) and athlon (contest)). More specifically, the term heptathlon refers to an athletics event consisting of seven events.

A triathlon is an athletic event made up of three contests (from the Greek).

A triathlon is typically a combination of swimming, cycling, and running.

Motorcycling Facts

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

A motorcycle is a two-wheeled vehicle powered by an engine. Motorcycles are one of the cheapest and most widespread forms of motorized transport for many parts of the world.

On a typical motorcycle the driver sits on a seat, with the hands on a set of handlebars and the feet supported by foot pegs.

When the bike is at rest, the rider puts one or both feet on the ground. Engine speed is controlled by twisting the throttle on the right handlebar grip with braking being controlled with a hand lever and foot pedal.

Shifting of gear ratios is controlled by operating a foot lever with the clutch being operated by a hand lever. Steering is accomplished by moving the handlebars.

The inspiration for the earliest dirt bike, and arguably the first motorcycle, was designed and built by the German inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in Cannstatt (since 1905 a city district of Stuttgart) in 1885.

Almost all commercially available motorcycles are driven by conventional gasoline internal combustion engines, but some small scooter-type models use an electric motor, and a very small number of diesel models exist.

The Displacement is defined as the total volume of air/fuel mixture an engine can draw in during one complete engine cycle. In a piston engine, this is the volume that is swept as the pistons are moved from top dead center to bottom dead center.

The wheel rims are usually steel or aluminum (generally with steel spokes and an aluminum hub) or ‘mag’ type cast or machined aluminum. At one time, motorcycles all used spoke wheels built up from separate components (see wheel building), but, except for dirt bikes, one-piece wheels are more common now. Performance racing motorcycles often use carbon-fiber wheels, but the expense of these wheels is prohibitively high for general usage.

Motocross Facts

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Motocross (often shortened to (MX) or MotoX) is a form of motorcycle racing or all-terrain vehicle racing held on enclosed off-road circuits and is widely considered the world’s most popular form of motorcycle racing.

Motocross tracks are often quite large (around 1 to 2 miles) and incorporate natural terrain features with varying amounts of man made jumps and other features.

It is not unheard of for a Motocross track to be made up entirely of hills and turns with no jumps at all. In contrast Supercross is an entirely man made track, comprising almost exclusively of a wide array of jumps and typically held in an indoor stadium.

Due to the size of the track, motocross races typically include 40 racers, in contrast to Supercross where it is only practical to have about 25.

Solo machines have engines ranging from 50cc to 550cc.

The most common distinction between motocross machines is whether they have two-stroke or four-stroke engines. Originally all bikes were four-stroke (in the Pre-65 era), but as the two-stroke engine improved they became more popular with their domination of the sport in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. The two-stroke engine produced more power than a four-stroke engine of the same capacity (cc), however fuel had to be mixed with oil.

The object of the contest is to complete either a defined number of laps (usually three to seven for amateurs, more for professionals) or fixed time period (anything up to 40 minutes) first.

Motocross can be an entry sport for motorsport in general. Classes for children as young as 4 exist for competition on 50cc machines.
